Sod is sold by the square foot, square yard, or pallet — a pallet covers roughly 450 square feet, though this varies by supplier. Add about 5% for trimming around curves and edges. Plan to lay it the same day it's delivered, since fresh sod dries out quickly.
How it’s calculated
Area × (1 + waste); square yards = area ÷ 9; acres = area ÷ 43,560; pallets = area ÷ 450, rounded up. Enter length × width in feet, or a total area in acres, sq ft, or sq yd (1 acre = 43,560 sq ft).

Worked example
A 40×30 lawn with 5% waste needs ~1,260 sq ft (about 0.03 acres), roughly 140 sq yards or 3 pallets.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting waste for curves and edges.
- Letting sod sit before installing, so it dries out.
Where it is used
- Ordering sod for a new lawn.
- Converting area to pallets for delivery.
