Standard garage sizes & what new homes get
A one-car garage averages about 12 × 22 ft (~264 sq ft); two-car garages typically run 20×20 to 24×24 ft (400–576 sq ft, with 18×20 the workable minimum); three-car garages start around 32 × 22 ft. Standard doors are 9 ft (single) and 16 ft (double) wide. Garages are near-universal in new construction: in 2024, 65% of newly completed single-family homes had a 2-car garage and 15% had 3+ bays — 80% with 2-car or larger — while only 9% were built with no garage at all. Three-plus-car garages are most common in the West North Central states (33% of new homes).

How it’s calculated & sources
Cost = floor area × per-sq-ft rate (detached or attached) × finish factor. Estimates are then scaled by a regional construction-cost factor for your area (U.S. average = 1.00).
Cost ranges from 2025–26 national home-improvement data (HomeAdvisor, Angi, Fixr and industry guides); regional factors approximate RS Means-style city cost indices. National average 2-car detached garage ≈ $40,000 — $40–75/sq ft detached, $30–55/sq ft attached.
